Being a tea lover, I made complete effort to have my tea right and enjoying it. However, the constant challenge which I had to fight is to be able to enjoy my cuppa with myself seated. Now, this seemed to be a distant reality considering I had to wake up early and prepare the dabba and leave. It evoked in me the basic question : What is this life which can't grant me a simple joy like this.
My hands always looked unkempt as a manicure would be money wasted. If they had to feel the Vim and water all the time, I always wondered if it made any sense to manicure them. I was mostly having dead dry cuticles and chipping skin and always chipped nail polish. The everyday treatment with Henko and Vim made me feel, why did I have to look at my hands.
The efforts of using a moisturiser and oil never helped much, except that it made me feel better that I managed to take care of my hands. The dream of having beautifully painted nails never lasted for more than a day maybe. This had killed the interest in me to even paint them now.
Weekends were a sinking affair as at least half the day of mine was in front of the sink. Every time I stood in front of the sink I sank from within. Did I work so hard all my life so that I could spend my weekends doing the dishes. If the expectation was to do the dishes, why work so hard.
My clothes at home were a sorry affair as my tummy would be often painted with turmeric, batters and flour. And when I went to bed, it was always wet after doing the dishes at night.
Earning big bucks never gave me the freedom to be or live as I wish. I had to succumb to people with low lying mindsets and chauvinistic idealogies. They conveniently upgraded whenever they wished to and not otherwise.
Washing machine was merely a showpiece and we were a butt of jokes when I told someone that we never used a washing machine. Their jaws dropped instantly with a blank look.
I only realized, we were making our lives miserable deliberately and having options, we never wanted to use them.
What a pity that people desire educated women but its the bucks which mattered. I often felt, that the women who never worked were at the mercy of someone and could resign to their fates stating they did not have financial liberty. Now, what would we call someone like me who had the needed financial liberty but no choice to live a life of my choice. At least those who never earned, could say they worked as they never earned.
I would say a maid is better who is paid to do the work, whereas I was being a maid who paid and did my work.
